Mechanical Engineering - University of Toronto
I am Tianyang Xing, a second-year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Toronto, expected to graduate in May 2028. With experience as a Technical Specialist at XCMG Group and volunteer work with Xuzhou Firefly Micro-Charity Organization, I have developed skills in technical support, process optimization, leadership, and communication. This portfolio showcases key projects and experiences that highlight my ability to combine engineering expertise with innovative problem-solving to solve real-world challenges and thrive in environments. I want to be a designer of cars or other means of transportation in the future.
Introduction
Over the course of my academic career, I have completed a series of projects that reflect technical expertise and collaboration that align with my desire to be a vehicle designer in the future. In the CNC machine tool design project, I worked closely with my teammates and demonstrated strong communication and teamwork skills to ensure the successful design of the multi-axis machine tool. This experience provided me with practical knowledge of mechanical design, greatly strengthened my CAD and engineering design capabilities, and enhanced my ability to cooperate effectively in engineering teams. This is an essential skill for future career as a vehicle designer.
For the cardboard bridge project, I applied structural engineering concepts to design a lightweight yet robust model. This project honed my problem-solving skills, taught me how important it is to run computer simulation tests before making a product, and made me realize the importance of optimizing design. This is more important for the future design industry, before the formal production of products must be simulated test to ensure that the product is available and safe.
Gravel bike design project and campus micro film project make me more passionate about transportation design and innovation. The bicycle project deepened my understanding of user-centered innovation, while strengthening my understanding of engineering design and principles. And the microfilm project has improved my ability to visually communicate complex ideas - an important aspect of my future career in presenting technical solutions to stakeholders. These projects highlight my engineering and creative design skills, which I can use in my future career in vehicle design.
In my first semester at ESC101, I demonstrated strong commitment and high standards on a team project, which was reflected in the peer review. However, the radar map pointed to communication as an area for improvement and inspired me to improve this skill. Through the peer evaluation of MIE243, my communication ability and teamwork ability have been significantly improved, which reflects my progress in professional collaboration.
In the second year, I was involved in more complex team projects at MIE243, where my communication skills improved significantly. I became more effective in discussions and collaborations, taking an active role in decision-making, tasking, and fostering inclusiveness. Learning from past challenges, I seek feedback and use it to grow as a valuable team contributor. This is very important in my future career development.
